Circle Games at Hoop Camp 2012!
It's just one of the amazing collection of workshops  hoopers will experience
at Hoop Camp 2012

Circle Games are... creative and original hoop games that will activate and captivate. This workshop explores games, their benefits, and how to have an amazing impact on your community through play!

~STRENGTH :: FLEXIBILITY :: BALANCE :: COOPERATION :: COORDINATION ::
COMMUNICATION :: SPEED :: AGILITY :: CORE STRENGTH ::INNER PEACE~
are enhanced in a playful way with Circle Games

When you're teaching groups of kids, a fast-paced lesson with lots of games is a must. And a sprinkling of fun during an adult lesson never hurts, either.

playing 'Cat and Mouse'

Workshop Flow:

-Games Play. I will flow through a list of original and creative games, briefly describing each with a play session to demonstrate each game.  Each game can be played just for fun, or with a deeper purpose and goal (ice breakers, personal development, group development, games for flexibility, balance, strength and endurance).

-Group Management Tips. How to get and keep a group's attention, manage distracted or rude participants, inspire unmotivated students and dissolve bad attitudes, all in a positive and lighthearted way.

-Metaphors For Movement. How to work with teachers to bolster their classroom learning by combining specific curriculum concepts with out-of-class active hoop games! Math and science in an unexpected FUN way!

The simple and inexpensive hoop can really transcend economic barriers to active living. There's no sign-up fee, no driving to practices, no uniform to buy. You don't even need shoes. With just one plastic circle someone can find infinite challenges to keep themselves active for life.

Looking around it's hard not to notice the some of the population getting softer, bigger and less motivated. Especially in economically challenged areas where we find financial barriers to good nutrition, placebos like TV, drugs or alcohol can distract us from our authentic and healthy selves. Getting active is key for getting happy, and a hoop is an accessible option: a portal for health. Instructors armed with an arsenal of creative games can battle these barriers with a smile, and inspire their communities with a lifelong love of movement!

Gratitude

It is with deep gratitude that I reflect back on our presentation of The Hooping Life movie on May 5 2012.  Shown as part of Elevate the Arts festival, this inspiring hooping documentary was free for the public to attend and featured performances by Jenny Hoopnosis, Lynda Allen and Tracey Mantha.

Big thanks to our advance sponsors:
NOVA Firespun Performance Arts, Dynamic Electrical Applications, Shasta Hoop Fitness, Vesta Fire Entertainment, Island Hula Hoopla, and individuals Isabelle, Lyndsay, Elizabeth, Kerry, Lisa, Lisa, Alison, and Gwen.  Thanks also to the individuals who donated at the screening.  We were able to recover the costs of the screening fees and offer the film free to the public.
The 'thank-you' pieces I created for the sponsors of The Hooping Life.
It's a cotton stretch knit scarf with UV hoopy yellow circles screenprinted on and the two part Revolution stencil done in black and UV pink!  This can be worn as a hip scarf, neck wrap, or saucy summer wrap top.  I can't wait to see how all the fine ladies wear theirs!

The Hooping Life Documentary comes to Courtenay!

The Hooping Life Documentary is coming to Courtenay!

It's a film about community.  It's a film about living your dream.

“You will see masters of the hula-hoop like you’ve never seen before. The sensation is back!”- Shaquille O’Neal

THE HOOPING LIFE, a feature-length documentary that invites you into the making of a cultural phenomenon that unabashedly loves something silly, will be premiering Sat. May 5, 2012 at 7 pm at the Courtenay Museum and Archives, hosted by Island Hula Hoopla and presented by this community-culture-loving-festival, Elevate The Arts.

This unique film screening will also feature HoopDance performances by Jenny Hoopnosis (Campbell River), Chelsea Rae (Courtenay) and Island Hula Hoopla (Comox Valley).  Admission is free, with donations being gratefully accepted to cover the film licensing fees.
Much like breakdancing and skateboarding, the modern-day hula-hooping subculture brings people together.“Hoopers” i.e. someone who lives to hula-hoop, have brought hooping to rough neighborhoods giving kids a chance at being kids; they practice hoop meditation to lift depression;  and fire-hoop to heal trauma.
Whether it is Karis who brings hooping to the runway, or HoopGirl who spearheads a  fitness trend, each hooper risks it all to make a life they are passionate about. And it pays off twofold. Eight hoopers over eight years, from Johannesburg to South Central, transgendered to southern Methodist, create a hooping movement that’s vibrant, edgy and infectious.
Hooper Shaquille O’Neal and 50s hoop-maker Art Linkletter introduce these interconnected stories.
“In THE HOOPING LIFE, real life is more fantastic than anything I could have scripted,” says veteran Producer-Director Amy Goldstein. “If something invigorates your soul, you’ve got to give it your all. Many hoopers are surviving these times as hopeful entrepreneurs, teachers and performers with a more colorful life that they ever imagined. THE HOOPING LIFE is an entrepreneur’s guide to happiness.”

Read The Province's article about how our community comes together to share our passion for the arts in the day-long culture crawl, Elevate The Arts.

Check out The Comox Valley Echo's article, about Elevate The Arts, which calls it a "Dynamic grassroots cultural uprising" , April 27 2012.

And on April 10 2012, this article in the Comox Valley Echo calls Elevate The Arts "a celebration of all things weird and wonderful"!

We will focus on the DANCE of HoopDance, exploring skills, lots of tricks, planes of movement, floor work, partner hooping, the importance of contrasts and the elements that make an exciting choreography with hoops. Suitable for past participants of Hula Hoopla or hoopers with basic skills.

DOUBLES HOOPING
Known as 'twins', this style of hooping explores the possibilities of using two hoops at once!  We'll use two big body sized hoops and also smaller hand held mini hoops to explore the grips, timing, and spacing behind this exciting skill.  Weaves, jumps, turns, stalls, lifts, separations and floorwork are all covered and easily broken down for quick understanding.  Although knowing how to waist hoop is a bonus, no hooping experience is necessary. Even true beginners will take away a wealth of new skills.  It's also a great shoulder, back and arm strengthener as well as a brain builder! Hoops provided or bring your own favourite set from home.
